Raptor hatching from an egg with banner
Realism · Colour · Photo
A young raptor with orange eyes and an open mouth emerges from a cracked grey egg, with its claws resting on the shell edge. Below, a tan banner with red lettering reads YOU BRED RAPTORS?, flanked by grass and green leaves. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft highlights on the egg and the dinosaur, set against lightly toned skin.

Dear Mr Haskett,

The wagons are sold, the big top has a hole over the trapeze where the rain comes through, and Mrs Pargeter's lion has gone to a farm in Norfolk. What we have left is the raptor pen behind the ring, and that is the only thing in the county that still makes the Saturday crowd pay at the gate. I enclose the last of the feed bills, which you will see are rather larger than I would like.
The egg that arrived in March is cracked now. Last Tuesday it split in the straw while the boy from the fairground was sweeping, and out came a little grey head with orange eyes looking straight at him as if he owed it money. Ruben has named it Brass. I have told him names are for animals we intend to keep, and he has looked at me the way only a nine-year-old can, so I suppose we keep it.
I am writing because the handbill printer in Lowestoft wants paying before he will run another sheet, and the banner painter asked me, quite seriously, whether we had bred the raptors ourselves or only bought them. I told him we bred them. I have put the words on the banner already, YOU BRED RAPTORS?, because the crowd likes a question and the question is the only honest thing I can afford to print.
If you can send the incubator heater and the second clutch by the end of the month, I will give you the dun mare and the rest of the ring lights. Brass is eating well. He stands on the shell's broken rim every morning and looks out over the empty seats as though he expects the crowd to come back, and I find myself waiting for them too.
Yours in hope, Edith Vane
