Dear Mr Pruitt, the new banner went up on Monday, the one with the pink sun behind the gate, and by Tuesday the giraffe had reached over the wall and rearranged the letters. I enclose the photograph. The G has become a C, the second F is upside down, and she wears the expression of someone who knows exactly what she has done.

Her name is Mabel, and she is nine feet of grumbling opinion. Gerald from maintenance wants the banner lowered out of her reach. I have told him the banner is not the problem. The problem is the loose fence panel by the duck pond, which Mabel found on Thursday and has since turned into a gap shaped like her opinion of our budget. We have had two inspectors, one hedgehog and a reporter from the county paper, and all three left with mud on their trousers.

On Saturday the Hendry twins came with their nan, who paid good money to watch the sunset behind a giraffe standing in front of a painted sun. Mabel stood very still for them, black head against the pink circle, while the light went down behind her. Nan said the old sign was better. Mabel then ate a pear off the child's hat, which the twins considered the best part of the day.

I have not fixed the letters, and I do not intend to. Each morning a few more visitors ask whether the park is named for the sign or for her, and I have stopped answering. Please send a new panel for the pond fence by the end of the month, and a larger pear.
