Give me script with heartbeat and paw print
Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo
A blue script tattoo reads Give me, with a long arrow sweeping beneath the words to a heart-shaped heartbeat line, and a small paw print sits below the arrow's start. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering in a flowing cursive style. The ink is a soft blue on pale skin, and the tattoo is shown close up against a plain background with a little hair and fabric at the edges.

The sea took the Marrow boat on the second Thursday of February, and it kept all five men aboard her. Ada Penrose stood at the top of the slipway with the grey dog's collar wound round her fist and watched the empty tide roll in over the place where the lamps had gone under.

The women went to Mother Gilly in the cottage behind the chandlery, because she kept the tide-book and the tide-book kept everything. She sat them at her table, licked her thumb, and turned pages until she found a column of small blue marks. "The sea keeps accounts," she said. "You don't ask it for a thing. You tell it what you'll give and then you hold to it." Ada said she would give anything. Mother Gilly looked at her over her spectacles and said, "Anything is the one thing it doesn't want."
So Ada took the dog out to the end of the mole at the bottom of the tide. She drew an arrow in the wet sand pointing away from the land, put her palm flat on the cold stone beside it, and said, "Give me Tom back, and I'll give you the count of my own heart, one beat at a time, every night until it stops." Then she sat down and counted. The dog lay across her boot and sighed.
At first light the boat came in on the flood with her engine ticking over like a pulse and Tom Barrow asleep on the thwarts, the only one the sea would part with. The dog went down the slip at a run, and when he came back up there were wet prints on the stones behind him, and one of them was a paw.
Ada still counts, though nobody has asked her to, and the dog has never once been far from her heel.
