Gizmo creature portrait on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A realistic portrait of a large-eyed, furry creature wearing a red cap, with its small hand raised to its chin. The shading is soft and smooth, with detailed highlights in the eyes and fur, and the skin tones sit against a pale blue background at the top of the frame. The tattoo fills the centre of a close-up photo of the forearm, with the hand and wrist visible at the lower left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Third night of fog on the Tarrow crossing, and the creature was still on the north bank, perched on my upturned coble with one small paw tucked under its chin. Its eyes were the size of pennies and wetter than the river. Mother Pruett says to leave well alone, that anything sitting so patiently has been waiting for a fare it cannot afford. I told her I had never turned away a passenger who could pay in copper, and she told me that was the trouble with me.

It had no copper. It had a red woollen cap pulled down over ears that twitched at every bell from the church across the water, and a look of such plain worry that I found myself asking what it was afraid of. It answered in a whistle that rose at the end, like a kettle deciding. I took that for a no.

On the fourth night the bell rang the wrong hour, and when I went down to the landing the coble was empty. The cap lay in the reeds, folded neatly, with cold water still running through the wool. Across the river, the lamp in Pruett's window had gone out, though she swore on her mother's grave she had been awake all night arguing with the kettle.

I rowed out at first light with the cap folded inside my coat. Where the reeds met the bank, a line of small prints led up into the alders and stopped at a door I had never seen, painted the same red as the wool, with a brass bell above it that did not ring.
