Glowing lamp post in a snowy scene

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A lit lamp post stands at the centre of this tattoo, set against a snowy scene with frosted trees and a pale path. The shading is smooth and detailed, with a warm glow from the lantern contrasting with the cool blue tones of the snow and sky. The design fills the skin in a tall, arched frame that follows the shape of the limb.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Quill had lit the lamp at the bend of Coldharbour Lane for forty-one winters, and in all that time she had never let the wick go out before the milk cart passed. She told me this on my first night, when the snow came down so thickly that the lamp looked like a yellow coin dropped into a bowl of milk. "The lamp is for people who can't see the road," she said, "and those are usually the ones who need it most."

I was twelve, sent up from the workhouse with a satchel, a tin of matches and a ladder too heavy for me to carry on my own. For a week I climbed and lit and climbed down again, my fingers so numb I could not feel the glass. On the eighth night a figure came out of the white beyond the lamp, walking slowly, as if the path were a rope strung across a river. It stopped at the edge of the light and did not come closer. Mrs Quill put her hand on my shoulder and told me not to go out to meet it.

"They have to walk the last yard themselves," she said. "That's the rule. The lamp can't carry anyone home."

The figure stood there until the church clock struck three, then turned and went back into the dark, slower than it had come. In the morning there were two lines of footprints leading from the gate to the lamp post, and only one line leading away. Mrs Quill was already sweeping the snow from the step, humming to herself, and she did not look up when I asked where the other set had gone.
