The bridge at Harrow Ford had two gates and one keeper, an old woman called Mother Dunmore who had never once lost a traveller in her ledger. Every spring the two villages quarrelled over the river, which ran brown and fast and belonged to neither of them. Mother Dunmore sat between the gates with her book and a tin cross nailed to the post, and she wrote down everyone who passed.

One wet March a boy came over with a cart of geese and no papers. He said his father had gone west for work and his mother had sent him after something she would not explain. The guards on the far side wanted to turn him back. Mother Dunmore looked at his face for a long time, then at the cross on the post, then at the cart, whose axle was held together with baling wire.

"Let him through," she said. "God has a plan, and my job is only to keep the line straight."

The guards laughed, but they let him cross, and the geese complained all the way to the far bank. Years later, when the spring flood took both gates and most of the bridge, the ledger was found snagged in an alder downstream, open at that page. Someone had drawn a small cross beside the boy's name, and below it the keeper's words, still legible, in a looping hand that had not once hurried.
