Godzilla head with red sun on upper arm
Japanese · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the head and shoulders of a green Godzilla-style monster with open jaws and teeth, set in front of a red sun motif with brushy edges. Red katakana characters sit along the bottom on a black shadowed base with stipple dots. The bold black outlines, flat fills and orange and green shading give it a bright, graphic finish, and the design fills the upper arm.

The reel snapped in the middle of the mambo, and by the time Keiko had climbed the projection stairs the lizard on the back wall was already halfway through the ballroom's glitter ball. Mr Oda had taped the splice twice with brown tape and sworn at it in the dialect of his village. "Keep them dancing," he said, not looking up. "The monster doesn't need to be good, only loud."

She went down with a fistful of tickets for refunds and found the floor full of people staring up at the sheet. A green shape filled the wall, jaws open, its back ridged like a row of dark knuckles. Behind it someone had hung a red paper sun from the balcony rail, and when the projector fan turned, the light bled orange through the tissue. Sadao, the tall clerk from the pawnshop, was still standing by the drinks counter with his hat in his hands, waiting for the band to start again.
The band did not start again. The needle skipped, the lights dimmed and the monster roared into the hush, and for one moment every face in the room was turned upwards and nobody was dancing at all. Keiko crossed to the counter and held out her hand. Sadao looked at it as if it were a live wire, then took it, and they stepped out onto the boards while the creature stamped its way through a painted city.
When the power came back, the paper sun was scorched and the reel was ruined, but the marquee outside had been relit, and the katakana on it spelled out the name of the dance hall in red. Oda chalked the new price on a board and underlined nothing. Keiko kept one ticket from that night folded in her apron pocket, the stub of a monster matinee with a sun drawn on the back in someone else's careful hand.
