Colour tattoo of a green cartoon monster stomping over grey buildings in a red sunburst, with a yellow banner reading Halt I am Reptar, on the upper arm near the shoulder.

Cartoon monster over a city on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A green cartoon monster with a wide open mouth and raised claws stands among grey city buildings inside a red and white sunburst circle. A yellow jagged banner above it carries the lettering HALT! I AM REPTAR! in bold outlined capitals. Bold black outlines, flat cartoon shading and a mix of greys and bright colours give the piece a comic book look, shown on the upper arm against a blue top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorrie Vance had lettered forty-one banners for the Gaiety, and the forty-second was the first that talked back. The boy who came in off Harbour Street at closing time had a sheet of cartridge paper rolled under his arm and a green beast on it, mouth wide, claws up, a row of grey tower blocks at its feet as if it had just finished its tea. "It needs shouting," he said. "Proper yellow, jagged round the edge."

She fixed him with the look she used on the wholesalers. "Who's it shouting at?"

"Everyone on the front. Mr Tully's cat. The bus."

She lettered it anyway, because he paid in pennies he had counted twice and the ink was already mixed. Stencil first, then an outline thick enough to stop traffic, the vowels stretched wide. When she held it up under the bulb, it declared in capitals that looked ready to bite that the beast was called GORDRAK and that everyone on the seafront ought to halt.

The boy hung it himself the next morning above the sea wall, and half of Scarrow came out to watch the sunburst turn pink in the spray. Nobody stopped. The gulls didn't either. Dorrie walked down at noon with her flask and found a second roll tucked under the wall where he had left it, and inside was the same monster, sitting down this time, politely eating the lighthouse with one neat bite out of the lamp.
