A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mari had been asked three times that evening to dance, and three times she had said the dance hall's floor was too loud for her feet. The truth was she had nothing to show for her years of mending other people's silver. Her mother's chain lay in the pawnbroker's drawer on Quay Street, and the band was playing the waltz her father used to hum over the nets.

Then a stranger came in from the rain with a leather case under his arm. He opened it on the bar and out spilled sheets of gold, pressed thin as a fish's scale, each one printed with lotus heads, hearts stacked like cups, round mandalas and drops of water hanging from a single point. He said they would stick to skin for a month, and that the gold would stay bright if she kept the blue dots fresh with a wet thumb. Mari laughed at him. He asked only for one dance in return for a sheet.

She took the lotus sheet and pressed it to her wrist beneath the lamp. When she lifted the backing paper the gold had gone down like light into water, and a row of chains ran from her knuckles to her elbow. Her mother's chain was still in the pawnbroker's drawer, but the worth of it was on her arm now, and the blue teardrops caught the lamp each time she turned.

She danced until the band packed up. Nobody asked what the metal was. In the morning, when she came down to the harbour, the stranger's case was gone from the bar and there was only a small gold heart stuck to the sill, glinting as if it had been left for her.
