Gold and silver metallic temporary tattoo sheet
Geometric · Colour · Flash
The sheet shows six vertical strip designs printed in metallic gold and silver foil on a white background. The designs include stacked chevrons, linked diamonds, rows of triangles, an interlinked chain with dot accents, a column of leaves with dots, and a fine leaf pattern. The linework is clean and even, and the strips are evenly spaced down the page.

Mrs Dunmore kept the foil in a biscuit tin under the wardrobe table, and in the last winter of the Harrow Brothers she let me do the cutting. Chevrons for the strongman's forearms, she said, because he needed things that pointed somewhere. Diamonds for the juggler, who dropped things and needed reminding of the shape of a catch. Triangles for the clowns, three to a row, one for each of the people who had stopped coming to the Thursday matinée.

The chain with the dots was for the high wire. She pressed it flat with the heel of her hand and laid it over the nightdress case where the thread had gone thin. 'Nobody on a wire looks down at the dots,' she said. 'They look at the gaps between them.' The leaves were the hardest. Each one had to be cut with the little curved blade, and the foil tore if you rushed, so I learned to breathe out slowly and let the blade do the work.
By February the big top had gone to a scrapyard outside Ashford and the lorries had followed it. We stayed on the winter ground with three caravans and a generator that coughed like an old dog. On the last night Mrs Dunmore peeled a band of leaves from its backing and pressed it onto my wrist with a damp cloth, the way the tent girls used to before every show. Under the work light it shone like something minted.
She sold the sheets by the dozen to a man from a theatre supplier in Croydon, and I kept one strip of silver triangles. On the caravan door, where HARROW had flaked down to nothing, I laid the triangles in a row so they pointed up at the place the sign used to be, then went to find the bus.
