Gold bee tattoos on two wrists

Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

Two wrists are held together, each showing a small bee drawn in a thin gold outline with a slightly dotted, stippled edge. The top wrist wears a chunky chain bracelet and the lower wrist wears a thin bar bracelet, with white nail polish on the fingers. The bees sit near the wrists against a bright, softly lit background, and the metallic gold ink is the only colour in the composition.

Dear Ada, the swarm came out of the old oak at the wood's edge on Tuesday, right while Mr Pollard was saying grace over his bread, and it hung off the gate like a dropped scarf. I did what you taught me. I kept my hands still and talked to them in the flat voice you use on difficult aunts.

Pollard wanted them gone by dinner. Nobody else in Hollin Cross would touch a swarm since the summer the Carrs lost their hive to wasps and blamed the vicar. So I fetched the skep from the shed, laid the old sheet down, and shook them in. It took the whole afternoon. By four my sleeves were gold with pollen, two fingers were stung, and I felt more like a queen than I have in years.

Then the strange part. When I lifted the skep, one bee who had been crawling along the rim rose into the low sun, and for a moment her whole outline shone as if someone had drawn her in gilt ink with a very fine nib. I have never seen a bee do that. I told Pollard and he laughed and said it was the brass buckle on my belt.

I still think about her. I've left the skep on the bench under the walnut, and every morning there is a thread of gold on the path, as though something small has been walking the wood's edge with a pen. Come at the harvest. Bring your sketchbook. I'll show you where the light goes through.

Love, Nell
