Gold and silver metallic foot tattoos
Geometric · Other · Colour · Photo
Two bare feet rest on a grey textured mat, with metallic gold and silver temporary designs on the skin. The designs include three triangles split into smaller segments, a rosette, a chain anklet with a quatrefoil motif, a thin arrow and a few toe rings. The foil-like finish gives the designs a bright, flat metallic colour against the warm skin tone.

The transfers came in a flat box from Leeds, forty sheets of gold and silver foil, and Nell had sold eleven before the ice cream van finished its first tune. Her stall stood where the promenade railings ran out, beside a man selling sunglasses. She tore the backing paper, pressed the foil down with a damp cloth, and counted to thirty while the design lifted free like something reluctant to leave.

The triangles sold best. Three of them, each split into smaller triangles, one segment glinting silver while its neighbours stayed gold, so the whole shape looked like a window catching the sun. People asked what they meant. Nell said they meant it was August. The rosette was harder to sell, and the chain anklet with its quatrefoil dangled like a key to a door nobody had tried. A boy with a sunburnt nose wanted only the thin arrow, and when she asked why, he said his father had pointed one at the lighthouse and said that was the way home.
The turn came on the Sunday, when the rain came sideways and the tide took the far end of the pier. Nothing sold. Nell sat on her upturned crate and counted what was left: four sheets, one torn across the middle. She peeled the last triangle off its paper and held it to the grey light. The foil was thinner than it had looked in the box. By Tuesday it would be a dull ghost on the skin, and by Thursday soap and sea would have taken it.
She packed the box, kept one sheet, and walked down to the wet sand where children had drawn arrows with sticks. Beside a crab's track she pressed the last triangle onto a flat grey stone and left it there, gold side up, to see who might find it before the tide did.
