Gold bride tribe script on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close view of a hand and wrist with the words bride tribe written across the inside of the wrist in gold metallic brush-style script. The lettering has a soft, hand-drawn look with slanted, joined strokes and a slightly textured foil finish. The skin is light and the background is plain white with a pink and cream paper flower at the top right, and the ink appears to be a temporary metallic finish rather than permanent ink.

The box of transfers arrived on the Tuesday, forty sheets of gold script Pauline had ordered from a shop she swore did the best foil in Kent. 'Bride tribe' across every wrist, no exceptions. I counted them twice on the kitchen table, which is how I knew we'd run short by Friday, when Lorraine's cousin turned up with a plus-one and nobody had the heart to send her home without one.

The cottage sat on the edge of the Whitstable marshes, where the wind came off the mud and rattled the window frames like someone wanting in. Pauline insisted on photographs the first night, all of us lined up on the decking with our arms out, gold lettering catching the lamplight. Half the transfers had already curled at the edges from the spray. Lorraine licked hers to stick them down, which made it worse, and by midnight the word 'tribe' on her arm had slid into something closer to 'trite'.
On Sunday morning the bride was the only one who hadn't peeled hers off. She sat on the back step with her wrist turned up, and I assumed she was being sentimental until she showed me the letters had worn into a faint gold smudge shaped like her own pulse point. 'It'll be gone by Wednesday,' she said. 'I don't want it to be.' I didn't ask her why. I just held out my own wrist, and we sat there letting the wind take the rest of the morning.
