Gold bride tribe script on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A close-up of a wrist showing the words bride tribe in flowing gold brush script, written across two lines with the word tribe sitting below bride. The lettering has a metallic sheen and textured strokes, and it appears to be a temporary metallic design rather than ink. The background is a softly blurred garden with palms and greenery, and the lighting is bright daylight.

Dear Nell, the foil transfers arrived this morning in a box that smelled of the post office and somebody's cigarettes, and I have spent the afternoon holding the sheets up to the window like a jeweller. Your mother says I am being fussy. I am being exact. Forty of them, gold, the script your cousin copied from the back of a seed packet, and the words had to come out right or the whole marquee would be laughing at us.

The Bramleys are coming down in the Hendersons' orchard now, thudding into the long grass by the wall. I walked up there at six with the folder under my arm and sat on an upturned crate while the wasps argued over the windfalls. The brush strokes caught the low sun and flared, and for a second the second line looked dug out of the ground, as if the orchard had been keeping it for us.

The girls came round after tea and wanted to try one. Lottie pressed a sheet to the inside of her wrist, rubbed it with the back of a spoon, and peeled the backing away, and there it was, shining against her freckles. Then she held her arm up to the kitchen mirror and started laughing, because the words read the wrong way round. Tribe above, bride below, back to front. We laughed until Mum came in to see what the fuss was.

I think I'll leave it that way for the photographs. Bring the crate when you come on Saturday, and I'll find you the last of the Bramleys. Send me a picture of the lot of you before the speeches start.
