Gold metallic temporary tattoo of the Greek letters delta and gamma beside an anchor on the inner wrist.

Gold Greek letters and anchor on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A palm-up hand shows a gold metallic temporary tattoo on the inner wrist, made of the Greek capital letters delta and gamma with an anchor to the right. The letters are bold, blocky and slightly textured, and the anchor has a simple outline with a ring at the top. The plain light blue background keeps the focus on the gold design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gold leaf would not lie flat in the meltemi, so Stavros Lemos worked the letters before sunrise, while the harbour was still glass. He had a size pot, a soft brush and a sheet of leaf so thin it lifted if he breathed on it. The boat had no name yet. The brothers who bought it from a dead man's widow could not agree on one, so they had settled on initials, delta for Dimitris and gamma for Giorgos, and asked him to make them look as if they had always been there.

Dimitris wanted an anchor too. The old one had gone off the point in February, snapped at the ring in a swell nobody had seen coming, and he said a boat without one would drift onto someone else's rocks. Giorgos called that superstition from a man who could not swim. Stavros drew the anchor small, to the right of the letters, with its ring at the top like a loose wedding band, and let the brothers argue while he laid the next sheet.

The leaf tore at the gamma. He pressed it down with a cotton pad, breathing slowly, until the gold settled into the grain like hammered coin. When he looked up, the caique was already slipping out past the breakwater with Giorgos alone at the wheel, one hand raised in a salute that might have been for the quay or for the brother left standing on it.

Dimitris stayed on the stones with his hands in his pockets until the boat was a speck. Then he crouched, and Stavros saw him trace the letters in the air with one finger, the way a man reads a name he is not yet ready to say aloud.
