Gold foil Greek letters and scissors on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a hand turned palm up, with a gold metallic temporary tattoo on the inner wrist. The design shows three tall Greek-style capital letters in a flared, hand-lettered form, with a pair of scissors whose blade curves beneath the letters. The gold foil has a textured, slightly crinkled finish, and the plain pale blue background keeps the focus on the wrist.

The gilder came up from London on the Tuesday train with a tin of foil and a box of stencils, and he wanted to know why anyone would keep a shop sign this long when the letters had gone the colour of stewed tea. Nell didn't answer him straight away. She was up the stepladder with a stiff brush, lifting grit from the corner of the window where the sea wind had been pushing in since the spring gales.

It was her grandmother who had painted the three letters, the year the harbour wall was rebuilt, and her grandfather who had hung the shears beneath them on a bracket of brass. Customers came in from the seafront asking about the scissors before they asked about hemming. A man once asked if they were for cutting rope, and Nell said they were for cutting anything that needed to be cut properly, which was the sort of thing her grandmother would have said.
The foil went on in the afternoon, a sheet at a time, pressed flat with a cloth and then rubbed until the creases came up like the skin of a wave. The gilder stood back with his hands on his hips. The blades were half open, curving under the lettering as if they were about to snip the last loose thread from the hem of the town. He said the foil would last a summer if she kept the damp off it.
When he had gone, Nell climbed the ladder again and turned the little brass hook so the shears faced the street. The gold caught the low sun off the water and threw it back across the pavement, and she stood in the doorway until the light moved on and left her with the ordinary grey of an October evening.
