Gold metallic hand chain and wrist cuff
Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo
The image shows a gold metallic design of a large teardrop medallion surrounded by dots, with a dotted chain running from the medallion to the fingers. A second band with a fine interlocking geometric pattern wraps around the wrist. The metallic gold appears to sit on the surface of the skin, possibly as a temporary tattoo, and the warm skin tones and sandy background create a bright, low-contrast composition.

The brass die had been my father's, and it still smelled of the oil he rubbed into it every Friday. I set the teardrop face into the press at the back of the shop in Porthleven while the kettle ticked on the gas ring, then fed in a sheet of gold leaf no thicker than a breath. Outside, the harbour wall was already white with gulls.

Dad had made transfers for the summer trade for thirty years: sun wheels, anchors, the little chain of dots the holidaymakers loved. He never let anyone else touch the medallion. Its border was a ring of seventeen dots, each punched by hand, and he used to say a dot that wandered off the ring was a sailor lost at sea. I counted them twice before I stamped a single sheet, my tongue between my teeth the way his had been.
The order came in on Tuesday from a woman in Newlyn who wanted the lot: the medallion, the dotted chain running to the fingers, and the cuff of fish-scale lattice he had cut from a tin of old printing blocks. She wanted gold rather than silver, because gold, she wrote, would look as though it had always been there. I posted the first batch on Thursday, wrapped in tissue that smelled of salt.
On Saturday I walked the sand at low tide and found one of my own transfers peeled off and stuck to a bottle top near the rocks, the medallion sun-faded but still bright at its rim. I left it where it lay. The sea would have it by evening, and I thought Dad would have called that a fair trade.
