Gold metallic temporary tattoo border sheet
Colour · Flash
The sheet holds about eight horizontal strips of ornamental designs, including chain links, repeated flower medallions, looped lace bands, concentric circles and scrolling borders. The linework is solid and even, with a metallic gold finish on a plain white background. The strips are stacked evenly across the frame, with the sheet resting on a black case.

Don't touch the sheet with your thumb, Tomos. The gold comes off on the skin like flour off a loaf, and then you're a boy with nothing to show but a grey print. Hold it by the edges, the way your grandfather held the assay cups when the men came up from the level with their faces black.

Your great-aunt Nessa bought this sheet off a tinker at the Redruth fair, the year the Carn Veor pumps went quiet. Eight strips, he swore, all real gold, all from a city that had never seen a shaft. She paid him a shilling and a brown hen. The chain links went along the mantel edge, the medallions across her Sunday collar, and the circles she pressed onto the lid of the tea caddy so there'd be something bright to look at while the rain ran down the cottage wall.
The tinker had lied about the city, and about the gold. Nessa found out on the first wet Sunday, when the medallions smeared into the chapel steps like spilt tea. The children didn't mind. They cut the lace bands into bookmarks and tucked them into the hymnals, and the Reverend never once noticed the difference.
Fifty years on, what's left is this sheet in its black case, two strips gone and the rest gone soft at the corners. I keep it because a thing can be worth nothing and still hold its pattern true. Look at the circles, Tomos. Each one sits inside the next, and not one of them touches the edge of the paper. Somebody measured that by eye at a kitchen table, and got it right.
