The chain came off the bench in one long unbroken line, and Marisol held it up to the window to check the links before the courier arrived. Her uncle had taught her to count them by touch, not sight. The order sheet was pinned above the soldering iron. A woman from the mainland wanted a set of bands for her daughter's wedding, all silver and gold, nothing that would catch on a veil. Marisol had drawn them out in pencil the night before: triangles stacked point to point like a flight of little boats, chevrons running up an arm like the wake of a ferry, scales that shimmered on the gold tone the way the sea did at the turn of the tide. Her uncle had called the scales her signature, and she had never told him she was tired of signing.

When the courier came she wrapped the bands in tissue and asked him to wait. Then she took a sheet of plain paper and pressed a fresh strip of gold leaf over the chevron pattern, working it down with the flat of her thumb. It lifted clean. She pressed it again, and it stayed. Some things, she decided, were better left on the surface where people could see them, and she sent the parcel off with a note about the clasp.
