Metallic geometric temporary tattoo sheet

Geometric · Mixed · Flash

A flat-lay photograph of a sheet of metallic temporary tattoo designs arranged in vertical columns. The designs include quatrefoil outlines, solid black quatrefoils, diamonds, starbursts, scrolls, flowers and chevron bands, drawn with clean, solid shapes and fine outlines. The sheet is lit evenly on a pale grey background, with gold, silver and black ink in a symmetrical, repeating layout.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pattern book had come with the house, tucked behind a loose board in the box room, and Miss Adela Crane had no intention of returning it to the sale. Every column of it repeated: quatrefoils in gold, quatrefoils in silver, quatrefoils gone solid black as if someone had pressed a thumb into the ink. She copied the sequence onto the blotter in the morning room while the wind worked at the sash and the sea beyond the promenade turned the colour of old pewter.

The lodgers noticed first. Mr Tanner, who took the front room and was a clerk at the corn exchange, complained that his wife's bracelet had begun to tick against the wardrobe. The Misses Oyler swore the diamonds on their tablecloth had multiplied overnight, and that the starbursts along the hall skirting were slightly larger than they had been on Sunday. Adela measured them with a brass rule and found nothing. She found only that the black quatrefoils sat a shade too near one another, as if they were counting.

On the last evening of the month she laid the pattern beside the tide table and followed the chevrons with her finger. They did not lead anywhere. They simply ran on, a border with no corners, the way a tide runs up a beach it has no intention of leaving. She folded the sheet into quarters, then into eighths, and put it in the stove. The flames took the gold first and the black last, and for a while the room smelled of metal and salt. In the morning the lodgers came down to breakfast in a fine mood, and nobody mentioned the bracelets again.
