Gold script love on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm is shown with the word love written in gold script across the skin. The thin, looping linework has a metallic sheen and appears to be a temporary gold design rather than ink. Behind the arm, turquoise sea, a rock arch and a blue sky fill the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Pascoe would not let me touch the gold until my third summer. Gold leaf, he said, is a cruel material; it lifts on a breath and will not forgive a heavy hand. So I spent June watching him lay the size with his thumb and wait for it to go tacky, while the ferry horn sounded beyond the breakwater and gulls argued over the bins behind the chapel.

The commission came from Nell Trevaskis, who had taken the old net loft on the quay and wanted one word on its seaward window. She did not want a sign, she said. She wanted the boats coming round the headland to read it before they reached the arch, so that anyone coming home would know somebody on shore had been waiting. Pascoe handed me the squirrel brush and told me to keep my breath out of it. The loops came out crooked on the first attempt, so I scraped them away with a razor and began again, the tail of the final e stretching toward the water like a line paid out from a winch.

It was the third week of August when the Mary Ann came round the rock late, her lamp already lit, and Nell stood at the glass with her palm flat against the word. Pascoe said afterwards that the sun had come low through the arch and caught the gold, so the letters threw a wobbling shine across the water and up the side of the hull. Nell did not speak for a long while. Then she asked whether I could make it last through the winter, and I told her gold leaf outlasts most of us. She laughed and said that was the trouble with it.
