Golden snitch on a lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A golden snitch with a yellow ball, teal-shaded wings and a long thin black line trailing down and curling at the end. The linework is clean and fairly thin, with soft yellow and teal fills and a small brown shading mark on the ball. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale lower leg against a dark background, with a shoe visible at the bottom right.

Old Maddox the cook swore the thing had come up out of the sea with the tide that morning, a gold ball no bigger than a hen's egg, with two wings beating so fast they hummed. He kept it in a cracked jar on the galley shelf beside the salt, because nobody aboard would touch a thing that glowed in the dark. The boys said it was a lamp. The mate said it was a fish with a grudge.

It wanted out, that much was plain. Each night it pressed its wings against the glass until the jar rang like a bell, and each night Maddox told it the same thing. "Not till we make port, and not till you tell me what you're for."
On the fourth night it spoke, though only to the cook and only in a voice like a rusted hinge. It said it was a thing that was always just out of reach, and that the trick of catching it was to stop reaching. Maddox laughed and said he'd been reaching for a pension for thirty years. Then he opened the jar.
The ball went up through the hatch in a streak of light, dragging behind it a long black thread that caught on the foremast and curled there like a question. In the morning the mate found the thread tied in a neat loop, and the galley shelf empty except for the salt. Maddox never said where it went. He only ever set the kettle on at dawn and left the hatch a crack open.
