The relay on Halden Shelf went quiet again last night, the third time this month, and I sat with the console until the hum came back at four. You will think me soft for telling you this, but I kept thinking about the words Marit scratched along the inside of the sensor housing before she was transferred down to the mining ring. Good vibes, in her looping hand, running round the brass like a bangle. Nobody on the shelf knew what it meant. Dov said it was an old Earth saying, the sort people printed on mugs before the sea took the mugs.

I asked the archive for the origin and got back four hundred pages of nothing useful, so I decided the meaning was ours to choose. When the pressure gauge in bay six began to drift, I stood there tapping the glass and murmured the words the way she must have, trying to be a person who believed a machine could hear kindness. Ridiculous. Then the needle settled, and I have never been able to explain that to anyone who was not standing there.

Keep the lettering when they replace the housing. Do not scrub it off. Leave it where a stranger will find it and wonder, as I did, whether someone once wanted the cold to be gentle.
