Green cat eyes on upper back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A woman lies face down on a patterned bed, showing a pair of stylised cat eyes tattooed across her upper back. Each eye has a bright green iris with a dark slit pupil, outlined in heavy black lines with sweeping lash-like flicks at the corners. The shading is soft around the irises and the composition centres the tattoo against bare skin.

Ruth had been sorting the stock for three days when the last tray turned up under the workbench, a shoebox of glass eyes wrapped in a copy of the Yorkshire Post from 1961. Mr Halloran, who had kept the taxidermy shop on Wicker since his father died, watched from the doorway with his cardigan buttoned one hole out. He didn't come in. He just said the box had been waiting since before the decimal coins.

Inside, nested in cotton wool, were two pieces of glass as green as bottle ends. Each pupil was a narrow black slit, and someone had painted a heavy rim around each one, with a flick at the outer corner like a seamstress finishing a hem. Ruth held them up to the strip light. "Those weren't for birds," Halloran said. "A Mrs Ansell ordered them for a cat that never got stuffed. The cat came in through the front window one wet October, sat on my father's counter and wouldn't be moved. She came back for it the next morning and it was gone, and so were the eyes she'd paid for. Dad always said she'd got what she asked for."
Ruth took the eyes home that evening and set them on the sill of her front room, facing the close where the streetlamp buzzed and failed and buzzed again. She told herself it was for the light. Around eleven a ginger cat came padding under the lamp, stopped dead on the wet flags and lifted its head towards her window. It stayed there a long while, perfectly still, as if it were waiting to be looked at properly. Ruth found that she was looking back.
