Green cat eyes on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A pair of green cat eyes with vertical pupils and dark outer liner sits across the inner forearm, with the eyes spaced evenly apart. The shading is soft and smooth, with bright highlights in each eye and blue tones in the irises. The plain skin and blurred indoor background keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Maud, the ship's cat has taken against the new cook's boy, and I have spent the whole of the middle watch sitting on the lid of the flour bin so she cannot get at the salt pork. Her name is Tallow, though nobody aboard will say it to her face, and she has the green of a bottle held up to the lamp. When the galley goes dark she is the only thing in it I can see clearly, two lamps low by the coal scuttle, watching the hatch as if she already knows who will come through it next.

Captain Reddaway says a cat's eyes hold the sea's colour when the sea is sulking. I told him the sea has never sulked at me, but he insisted, and he is generally right about weather. Yesterday the glass fell fast and Halloran, the cook, swore he could smell the storm in the bread before it rose. Tallow sat on the dresser through the whole of it, pupils narrowed to slits, and not once did she flinch when the pans went over.
The storm came at four bells. We lost the spritsail and two casks of water, and the boy was sick over the rail with the sort of noise that makes a man wish himself elsewhere. But in the galley, with the lamp swinging, Tallow walked the top of the spice rack as neatly as a clerk, and when the lamp finally steadied she was sitting exactly where she had been all along, looking at the hatch.
I have decided she knows something we do not. Halloran says that is nonsense. This morning I found the hatch bolt drawn back from the inside, and a single wet paw print on the flour lid, and I have not told anyone yet, because I want to see whether she takes the rest of the flour as her fee. Your loving brother, Ned.
