Green shamrock tattoo on a foot

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a four-leaf clover made of heart-shaped leaves, with a looping stem and an interlaced knot at the centre. It has a bold black outline with green and yellow-green colour fill, and the shading is soft and graded within each leaf. The small design sits near the middle of the frame on pale skin, with a carpet visible behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain has come sideways off the estuary again, and the canvas over Abney's trestle sags with every gust. You have been at his stall since eight, sorting a tin of brass buttons that nobody buys, and by noon the twine on his tray has gone soft and dark with wet. He sells everything here: keys cut while you wait, bootlaces by the metre, a clock that runs backwards on Tuesdays. Today he has one thing he will not sell. It is a length of green wool his mother spun the winter before she died, and he wants it tied into something before the market closes.

"Four loops," he says, pushing the wool across the damp boards toward you. "Each one a heart turned on its side, so the leaves hold hands. Then the stem comes down and goes under itself, and the middle is where it all pulls tight." You try, and the wool keeps slipping through your fingers like something alive. Your first knot falls open. So does your second. A woman in a yellow mac stops to watch, then buys a bag of cherries from the boy at the next stall and walks on, and the rain keeps falling.

You slow down because there is nothing else to do. You stop counting the minutes until the stalls close and follow the wool instead, over and under, letting each heart find its own shape. When the centre finally locks, it lies flat and bright on the tray, the green going almost yellow where the light catches it.

Abney picks it up, turns it over once, and sets it in the palm of your hand. "That's the price," he says. "Nobody hurries a clover, and nobody gets to keep one unless they stopped long enough to tie it." You close your fingers around the knot and walk out into the wet with no coins in your pocket and nothing else you need.
