Grey cat with third eye and gem collar

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A drawn design of a grey cat's head and upper chest, shown facing slightly to the side, with large pink-lined ears and a third teal eye on its forehead. Bold dark outlines and soft grey shading give the fur texture, while the pink nose, teal eyes and yellow collar with a teal gem pendant add colour. The drawing is centred on a sheet of paper held on a pink clipboard.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat came aboard at Valparaíso in a mail sack, and by the time we raised the Horn she had the galley to herself. Cook called her the Admiral. She had grey fur thick as a wet coat, two ordinary eyes the colour of sea glass, and a third, a slit of teal set high on her brow, that never once closed. The stone on her yellow collar was a paste trinket from some Lima jeweller's tray, and she wore it the way a bishop wears his ring.

I was the one who fed her, so I was the one she woke. Most nights she sat on the pot rack above the stove, her good eyes on the bulkhead and that third eye fixed north-west, where there was nothing but black and a few stars. Cook said she was reading the glass. The barometer in the passage had been sliding all afternoon, but nobody hurried to take in sail until the Admiral leapt down, walked the length of the mess table between the tin plates, and sat square across the bread board until I understood.

We took in the topsails at four bells in the middle watch. The sea came up grey and sudden, the way she had promised it would, and for six hours the Cape had its way with us. Pots went over, the stove died, and we ate cold biscuit in the dark with our oilskins buttoned to the chin. Nobody thought to look for the cat, so nobody was surprised when she turned up dry and sour-tempered at my elbow.

When grey light came back through the skylight, I found her asleep on the chart table, paw across the green stone, and the third eye for once shut.
