Camper van inside a circular map
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A front-facing Volkswagen camper van sits centred inside a circle of map linework, with fine lines for coastlines and grid lines and some place names partly visible. The van is shaded with stippled dots that give the windscreen, headlights and bumper depth, while the map is drawn with lighter, thinner outlines. The tattoo is in black ink only and fills the frame against plain pale skin.

The officer at the barrier has waved the queue behind you through, but he keeps your passports and taps the map spread across the steering wheel. Someone has ringed Venice in biro, then Prague, and drawn a wobbly line between them in a lay-by outside Graz at two in the morning, when the petrol was nearly gone and nobody could agree on the route. He asks where you think you are going in a van this old, and you tell him the truth: she has already been everywhere you ever wanted to go, and now she only needs pointing.

Hedda has a split windscreen like a pair of tired eyes and headlamps that never quite match. Her bumper still carries the dust of a field outside Ljubljana, where you slept with the side door open and the stars leaning down over the roof. Your sister says the badge on her nose is the one thing that has never let you down, and you have never told her she is wrong. The map was sent to you by a man who called the world a circle you could roll home along, and at the time you thought he was being clever.
The officer frowns at the shading on the bonnet, the fine stipple that makes the van look more solid than the tarmac under her wheels. He asks if you have anything to declare. You say only the map, which is true, and the route you have not decided yet, which is truer. He slides the passports back across the counter and lifts the barrier with a sigh, and you ease Hedda forward into a country that does not yet know her name.
