Grinning cartoon character on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A large colour tattoo of a grinning cartoon character with pointed ears, wide eyes and a bold black outline fills most of the frame. Orange and yellow fill the body, with pink, blue and brown accents, and the shading is soft and flat. A second, smaller and more faded cartoon tattoo sits on the adjacent leg at the left edge, partly out of focus.

The windfalls under the Bramley trees had been bruised by wasps since Tuesday, and you had decided, before the sun was properly up, that they were yours by right. Mrs Oddie's ladder leaned against the wall where she had left it. Your grin was already in place, the one that had got you out of the henhouse and into the cider shed more times than anyone could count, and you practised it on the crow watching you from the gatepost.

Your cousin, the brown one with the lid for a head, was meant to keep watch from the water butt. He was asleep in it. You kicked the butt twice and it rang like a bell, and then the dog came round the corner with its ears flat and a noise like a kettle coming to the boil.
You ran. Of course you ran, sideways and flat-footed, scattering apples like coins. You went under the fence, through the nettles and out onto the lane, where you stopped to look back. Mrs Oddie was standing in her doorway with a pie tin in her hands, laughing so hard she had to lean on the frame.
She set a windfall pie on the sill to cool. By the next morning it was gone, and in its place sat an empty dish with a note in her round handwriting: Leave the good ones on the tree. Pressed into the rim, where the crust had been, was a grin with two pointed ears, and it looked very pleased with itself.
