Nobody at Thornwick hall would dance with the big orange cat, on account of his feet, which were long and slapped the boards like wet sacks. The small dog came in late every Saturday with his ears flapping and his purple nose sniffing for cider. He never asked anyone to dance either, but he went round the room telling everybody the cat was his brother and a fine dancer when nobody was watching.

One wet October the fiddler, Tam Greave, bet the pair a jug of cider that they could not waltz across the floor without the cat treading on the dog. The cat laughed so hard his red nose shook loose a button from his waistcoat. The dog said nothing. He only tucked his small feet under him and hopped up onto the cat's shoulder, the way a boy rides a gatepost.

They went round the hall once, then twice, the cat's great slaps keeping time and the dog singing out a tune nobody knew. By the third turn the room had stopped talking. Even Tam stopped sawing and simply watched, one eye shut, the other wet with the sort of laughing that is nearly crying.

When the lamps were out, the jug stood empty on the step, and beside it lay a button, orange, sewn back on with a loop of purple thread. Next morning the frost on the boards held two sets of prints going out the door together, one long and one short, and neither of them stepping on the other.
