Stretching cat with watercolour splashes on a foot

Other · Colour · Photo

A thin black outline draws an orange tabby cat stretching forward with its tail raised, beside a small cluster of flowers and a butterfly. Soft watercolour washes in orange, pink, purple, teal and yellow bleed around the figure and the flowers, with loose splashes fading out at the edges. The tattoo sits across the top of a bare foot against a blurred grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had got into the boiler again, so Gran set her tin of paints on the kitchen table and told me to keep my hands wrapped round a mug. Our tabby, Biscuit, was already stretched across the flagstones by the Aga, front paws out, back end lifted, pretending the cold hadn't reached him. Gran said he stretched like a man who'd been told he owed rent.

She painted him in the thin light coming off the yard. Orange first, wet into wet, then a wash of teal she'd mixed from the dregs of a jar because the good blue had run out in October. Pink and violet went in at the edges, flicked off the brush with a quick turn of her wrist, the way Grandad used to paint the sky over the top field. I pencilled the outline while the colour dried, and she inked it over with a pen that scratched whenever the nib caught on the paper.

Outside, the hedge was grey and bare. She wouldn't paint anything that wasn't there, she said, unless it had been there once. So she added a cluster of cosmos in the corner, the pink ones that had gone over in September, and a small white butterfly resting on a stem, no bigger than my fingernail.

When the paint was dry she tipped the page toward the window and we both looked. In the picture Biscuit was still reaching for something just out of frame. Behind me the real cat yawned, stretched the same long way, and padded straight across the wet sheet, leaving one neat orange paw print in the teal.
