Grinning devil with Just Wait lettering
Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of a leering devil in profile-leaning three-quarter view, with a swept-back quiff, two curled horns, a pointed ear, narrowed eye and a toothy grin. The words JUST WAIT in bold capitals sit either side of the face. The linework is bold and uniform with solid black fills for the hair and horns, and the image is entirely black and white on a plain pale background.

Tuesday, 9 October. The stranger came back to the lych gate this morning, hair oiled into a great black wave, two small horns showing under his hat brim as if he had forgotten to hide them. He wanted the birch strip beyond Hollins Bottom, the one the parish has never cut, and offered Mrs Greer twelve shillings for it. She laughed. I did not. He only winked, slow, and said the words he always says: just wait.

Wednesday. Nothing happened, which the village took as proof he had gone. Tull's dog came home with its pads torn by brambles that grow nowhere near the path. The well up top tastes of pennies. I wrote his words in the back of the register so I would not have to say them aloud, and found my pen kept drawing a pointed ear beside them.
Thursday. The birch beyond the Bottom have all turned at once, every leaf the colour of a struck match, and the whole wood seems to lean towards the cottages. Pell's boot prints run right up to the trees and stop. Nobody saw him leave. The children will not play by the stile, and Tom Hale, who believes nothing, has chalked a cross on his doorpost.
Friday. I walked out to the stile with a sack of salt and a clear head, meaning to tell him to his face that we would not sell. Something laughed in the trees, not a voice exactly, more like a man trying not to laugh in church. Then it came again, close behind my shoulder, low and pleased: Just wait, Miss Ashdown. I have all the time there is.
