Halloween pumpkin, bat and candy corn on hand
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Three small Halloween motifs sit spaced apart on the back of a hand: a jack-o'-lantern face with triangular eyes and a jagged grin, a solid black bat with ragged wings, and an outlined candy corn with three stripes. The pumpkin and bat are filled in with solid black ink, while the candy corn is drawn as a thin outline with no shading. The ink is black only, set against a plain light background with soft natural light across the skin.

The last boat leaves Skerry Quay at half past six, and you are standing on the slipway with a carrier bag of sweets and the wrong shoes for the wind. Behind you, the island shop has pulled its shutter halfway down. Callum Reid is already in the stern of the Morag, shouting that the tide has turned and he will not wait for anyone who dawdles over pumpkins.

The pumpkin is yours, or it was meant to be. Your gran carved it for the school fete and left it on the bench by the bait shed, its triangle eyes grinning at the harbour with the jagged mouth you both argued over. Above the wall a bat drops out of the dusk, ragged at the wings, and swoops past the chapel bell. Nobody on Skerry keeps bats. You count the candy corn in the bag instead: eleven sugar stripes of orange and cream, enough to bribe a stranger.
The Morag's engine fades into the grey without you. The lamp on the pier clicks on, and the pumpkin seems to lean closer, its grin wider in the sudden light. You sit on the wet step, tip the bag out, and share the candy corn with the bat, which takes the one you offer and perches on the bell rope to chew it.
Callum rows back at dawn, grumbling about the price of diesel, and finds you asleep with your head on the pumpkin's lid. He does not ask where the bat went. He only sees the single candy corn left on the slipway, pointed at the mainland like a little orange arrow, and he knows you will be on the next boat home.
