Full sleeve tattoo of a fiery sunset landscape with a swirling sky and glowing rocky ground, in realistic colour, covering the upper arm and forearm.

Fiery landscape full sleeve on an arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The sleeve shows a barren landscape with a swirling dark sky at the top, giving way to red and orange clouds and a low sun. Below, dark grey rocks are outlined with glowing orange cracks that suggest lava or heat. The work is painterly and fully shaded, with smooth blends between orange, red, blue-grey and yellow tones across the whole arm.

Ruth had counted the lamps twice before the cage went down, the way her father had taught her, and still the foreman sent the boys up the valley road with a sack of bread and no explanation. The spoil tip above Cwm Garw had been smoking since Tuesday. Nobody in the village called it a fire. They called it the heat, the way you might name a relative who arrived for a weekend and never packed his bag.

Her brother Emrys was eighteen and drew on the backs of wage slips. He had a tin of their mother's watercolours and a habit of painting the sky as though it owed him money. That evening he stood against the chapel wall with a sheet pinned flat and tried to get the colour right: the bruise of cloud over the pithead, the orange sun sitting low behind the ridge like a coin pressed into wet clay. "It's not the colour," Ruth said. "It's the cracks. The light only comes out where the ground breaks."

They walked up at dusk to see it. The rock of the old workings glowed along its seams, orange threads running through the grey like veins through the back of a hand, and above them the sky had begun to turn, a dark whorl spinning slow over the mountain as if someone were stirring it with a spoon. Emrys stopped with the pencil in his fist and didn't make a single mark.

Ruth took the sheet from him and folded it into her coat. "Paint it when it's cooled," she said. He nodded, and neither of them mentioned the heat again on the walk back down, though the glow followed them all the way to the terraces.
