Hamsa hand with eye on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A hamsa hand with a central eye sits on the forearm, with an ornate pattern of scrolls, paisley shapes and dotted outlines filling the hand. The linework is bold and dark, with dotwork edges and smooth green and teal shading that fades from lighter to deeper tones. Below the hand, a small piece of cursive script is tattooed on the skin against a dark blue background.

The brass hand hung above the bench in my aunt's workshop in Cardiff, and every morning she touched its fingertips before she lit the lamp. She said it was for luck, though she never said whose. I was nine the summer she taught me to set stones, and I learned that the trick to a good setting is patience with the metal, not force. You warm it, you wait, and then it gives.

The summer I turned fourteen, a man came in from the docks with a ring he had made for his wife and got wrong. The band was thin as wire and the eye he had tried to set in its centre kept sliding out. My aunt looked at it for a long while, then turned it under the lamp so the green glass caught the light and threw it across the wall in pale, moving leaves. She told him the eye was not the problem. The problem was that he was trying to hold it still.
He went away grumbling. Two days later he came back with the ring in a cloth, and the eye was seated so snugly it looked grown there. He had softened the band, pressed dots along its edge with a nail punch, and shaped little scrolls where the metal had been plain. His wife had seen it and laughed, he said, and asked if he had made her a hand to hold.
My aunt slid the ring onto her own finger and held it up to the green bulb of the lamp. Then she reached up and touched the brass hand once more, and I understood, though neither of us said it, that the luck had always been in the making.
