A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dev Pallister had been locking up Harrow and Vine for eleven minutes past midnight when the rain started, thin and sideways, the kind that found the gap under a collar. He dragged the shutter down over the window of secondhand watches and stood a moment beneath the sign. Above the door hung the old brass hamsa, its fingers worn smooth by decades of palms touching it for luck, and in its centre the painted eye looked out over Briggate as if it had been waiting all evening for someone to be honest.

Old Mr Sandhu had kept that eye on the door for thirty years. He used to say it was there so nothing bad could look in, and Dev had always taken this for talk about the till. The words along the foot of the ledger were in Latin, faded to a brown ghost: noli quaerere extra. Sandhu had translated them once with a wink, don't go looking for what is outside you, and then sold a Rolex to a man with no shoes on.

The ring had been left on the counter that afternoon by a woman who would not give a name, only a pawn ticket she had forgotten to fill in. Dev found it when he counted the tray, a thin band warm from somebody's hand, engraved with a date and nothing else. He could have put it in the safe with the other unclaimed things. Instead he held it up to the lamp, looked again at the eye above the door, and slid the ring into his own coat pocket. Outside, the rain kept falling on an empty street, and the eye stayed open.
