Hand-drawn flash design of two closed eyes with radiating dotted lines, above and below the words 'AND YOU SEE YOUR GYPSY' in dark brown lettering on a pink textured background.

Hand-lettered eyes design on pink

Lettering · Colour · Flash

A hand-drawn design shows two closed eyes with lashes and short dotted rays, framed by stylised block lettering in dark brown ink. The words are set in two lines, one above the eyes and one below. The background is a textured pink with faint marks, and the ink is a single dark tone, so the image reads as a drawing rather than a tattoo on skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The board had been propped behind the ticket office since the summer the pier ballroom burned, and nobody at Corbridge Road knew whose hand had painted it. Dolores Finch, who ran the lost property cupboard with a biscuit tin and a ledger, assumed it was a joke someone had forgotten to collect. The pink had gone chalky at the corners. Two shut eyes sat in the middle, lashes fanned out like the spokes of a cartwheel, and the words above and below were lettered in a brown that looked more like tea than ink.

Ruben Sayer came in on a wet Tuesday asking for it by name. He was a big, careful man with a fairground wristband still on his arm, and he turned the board over in his hands as if it might be heavy. His mother had kept a booth on the front until 1978, he said. She painted her eyes shut on every sign she made so the punters couldn't read her face. 'A person who can't see you can't lie to you,' she used to tell him, 'and they'll pay for the not knowing.'

Dolores signed the form and let him go, though she couldn't have said why she felt she was giving away something of her own. That night the last northbound slowed under the footbridge and she found herself standing by the clock, eyes closed, listening to the brakes. When she finally opened them, the board was leaning against the cupboard door where she had propped it. She had turned it to face the platform, so the painted eyes were looking straight back at her.
