Handwritten I'll love you 'til the end lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a line of handwritten script reading I'll love you 'til the end, set on a plain white background with the text in the lower right. The letterforms have thin, even black linework with loose, flowing joins that suggest a freehand lettering design. There is no colour, shading or body placement visible.

The envelope had been sitting in the lost property cupboard since March, wedged behind a box of odd gloves, and nobody asked for it until Mr Hallam came to the hatch on the last train. He didn't want his umbrella or his brown leather bag. He wanted the letter inside, and he described it before I had even reached the drawer: blue ink, a crease through the middle, a thumbprint of tea on one corner.

It was addressed to Nell, care of Platform Four, in handwriting that looped the way a person writes when they are trying hard not to shake. He told me he had dropped it on the platform in February, and by the time he'd picked it up the doors were closing and she was already gone north. He went home that night. He went back every Friday for a month, hoping she would be sitting on the bench by the clock, and then he stopped going, and then he started again.
I asked whether he wanted me to post it on. He laughed, a short dry sound, and said the trouble was he'd only ever managed the one line. He opened the envelope on the counter so I could see. Inside, in the same looping hand, was a single sentence: I'll love you 'til the end. No name at the bottom, no date, nothing else.
'Keep it,' he said, sliding it back across the wood. 'If she ever comes asking, tell her it was true.' The 6:40 was announced over the tannoy. He walked out onto Platform Four with his hands in his coat, stopped at the bench by the clock, and then sat down there himself to wait. I put the envelope back in the drawer, under the single gloves, and this time I wrote the date on the front.
