Handprint tattoo on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large solid black handprint sits on the upper back, with the fingers spread and the thumb angled up toward the shoulder. The ink is dense and mostly flat, with soft, uneven edges and some lighter areas where the palm meets the fingers. The photo is taken from behind with the neck and shoulder in frame, and the background is a plain indoor room.

Every morning before the first queue formed, I wiped the inside of booth three, and every morning there was a hand on the glass. Not a smear. A full palm, fingers spread wide, the thumb tipped up towards the top corner as though it were trying to reach the frame. I told the supervisor it was grease from the night shift. Nobody on nights was ever tall enough to leave a print that high.

The crossing at Sallow Bridge had been a border for eleven years, and in that time I had cleaned a great deal of glass. Passports pressed against it, foreheads, the flat of a hand held up to say wait. I knew the difference between a plea and a goodbye by how long the mark lingered before the breath faded. This one never faded. I breathed on it myself once, and the outline stayed sharp, dark as a bruise, while the glass around it clouded and cleared.

In March a woman came through with a boy of about six, both carrying the same paperwork in the same wrong order. The officer sent them back to the waiting room. The boy stood at booth three and reached up, palm flat to the glass on the inside, the way the mark sat. Then he looked at me through it and laughed, because our hands did not match, his too small, the thumb too low.

I stopped wiping that glass after that. The mark is still there, and I have stopped pretending it is grease. Some mornings I put my own palm against the outside, where the light comes in, and I wait for the cold to come through.
