Hands with black finger bands and linework

Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest flat against a pale, textured wall, with solid black bands inked around the fingers of both. The lower hand carries a larger abstract linework design across the back, and the upper hand shows a black band at the wrist. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the hands wear a gold band and a black ring.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorrie Penhallow had skimmed lime render on the harbour wall at Porthkerran for thirty-one years, and she still tested every coat the same way: flat palms, pressed hard, lifted slow. If the plaster kept the print of her fingers, it was ready for the trowel. If it held a ridge of dried grit, it wasn't.

Her nephew Caleb had come down from Bristol in March with a sketchbook and his late mother's ring, and he had no interest in lime. He wanted to watch the tide line on the quay, the green bloom that climbed a hand's height with every spring tide. Dorrie told him the wall was honest. Salt showed everything in the end, and she'd rather he learned to read that than read his phone.

On the last morning of the job the render went up pale and wet as milk. Caleb pressed his hands against it beside hers, the way she'd taught him, and when they peeled away the plaster kept every crease, the knuckle lines, the small oval dent where the ring had sat. He asked whether the wall would remember them. Dorrie said it would remember until the sea took it, which, she supposed, was the same thing.

The next spring tide came in grey and high, and by the Thursday the quay wall was a smear of wet slate. Dorrie walked down alone at dawn and crouched where the water had drawn back. Under the weed line, faint as breath on a window, two hands were still lying flat against the stone.
