Then came the November gale that took half the roofs off the yard. Rosa Dunmore, who sold marigolds and the odd red rose from the stall opposite, found him sheltering under her tarpaulin with his best eels in a basin on his knees. She didn't say a word about it. She simply passed him a tin mug of tea and went back to tying her bunches, while the water ran off the canvas in a silver sheet between them.

The gossip ran the length of the market for a month. Every Friday after that, a dented tin of sugar appeared on her step, and every Friday she left a bunch of orange marigolds on his counter, and neither of them spoke of it. Folk assumed they were feuding. They weren't. They were paying each other back in the only currency either of them trusted.

The next spring the sun came out over the yard at last, a red disc hanging behind the chimneys. Edwin wiped his hands on his apron, walked the length of the market in front of everyone, and held out his palm. Rosa took it. He didn't let go for a long time. "Thank you," he said, and the words sounded so strange in his mouth that the lad with the tubs dropped one.
