Grace upon grace in fine script lettering

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows the handwritten phrase grace upon grace in flowing black script, with a small dot before the first word and after the last. The letters are drawn with a thin, even monoline stroke and connecting tails, with the word upon sitting slightly lower than the two outer words. The plain white background and black ink give a clean, high-contrast composition with no shading or colour.

Dear Nell,

The lane flooded again on Tuesday, so the vet's van had to stop at the gate and he walked the last quarter mile carrying his bag. Ewe number nineteen had twins at four in the morning, both breech, and I knelt in the straw with my arm in up to the elbow while Dad held the lamp and swore at the wind. One lamb came out alive. The other we rubbed with straw until it gasped, and it is now in a box by the Rayburn, bleating at the cat as if the cat owed it money.

I found Mum's notebook in the dresser drawer while I was hunting for the iodine. You know the one, with the feed prices and the dates the tups went in. On the last page, under a column of sums that never quite added up, she had written grace upon grace in that loopy hand of hers, with a dot at either end as if she were ticking it off. I asked Dad what it meant. He said it was from the Gospel, something about one blessing coming after another, then went quiet, blew his nose, and said the bins needed filling.

I have decided it means lambs that live when they shouldn't, the feed merchant accepting a late cheque, and you ringing on a Sunday even though you're skint. It doesn't need to mean anything grander than that. I copied the words onto the back of an envelope and pinned it above the sink, dots and all.

Come home for the lambing if you can. The second one needs a name, and I'm not doing it on my own.

Love, Ruth
