Handwritten lettering reading a teenage vow
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a drawn lettering design of four lines of uppercase handwritten text on a plain white background. The letters have loose, sketchy black outlines with uneven strokes and some doubled lines, giving a hand-drawn feel. The black ink sits centred with generous white space around the text, and there is no skin or body part visible.

The hatchback's heater only worked on the passenger side, so Ruth sat with her coat zipped to her chin and her feet on the dashboard, insisting the vow didn't count. They argued about it the way they argued about everything, with the radio off and the windows steaming up. Ruth said a vow needed witnesses, and the only witness was a gull picking at a battered sausage by the bins. Tom said the gull counted. He said that if you broke a vow before the last bus, you had to walk home, and the walk was nine miles, and he wasn't doing that for anyone, least of all her.
Ruth dug the thick black marker out of her art bag, the one she used for posters for the school play. She drew the words on the inside of the windscreen, backwards so they'd read the right way from the outside, and as the glass cleared the letters came through wobbly and doubled, like someone trying hard not to cry or laugh.
The last bus swung round the roundabout at ten to eleven with its lights blazing. Neither of them moved. Tom leaned across and wiped one corner of the glass with his sleeve, smudging TONIGHT halfway out of existence, and said that was a technicality too. Ruth didn't argue. She got out and slammed the door, and the vow stayed on the windscreen until morning, the same as the two of them.
