Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A handwritten quote in black thin-lined script reads be happy for this moment, followed by this moment is your life, set on a slight diagonal. A small outlined heart sits at the lower left of the text. The design is shown on a plain white background with generous empty space around it.

The ferry was due at twenty past four, and by a quarter past I had read the timetable pinned under the harbour clock so often that the damp had started to blur the numbers. My bag was packed for the mainland, my ticket was folded in my coat, and I had decided that if the boat was late one more minute I would walk to the end of the pier and shout at the water.

Nan was not impressed. She sat on the bench outside the shop with a paper cone of chips balanced on her knee, flour still on her wrists from the morning's bread. "You'll wear out the stone standing like that," she said. "The boat comes when the sea lets it. Sit down before you fall in."
I didn't sit. The wind came round to the west, the flag on the pier went stiff and then limp, and a man in an orange jacket came up the slipway shaking his head before he even reached us. Cancelled until the morning. I stood there with my bag at my feet and felt my whole plan lift off the island like gulls. Nan just handed me the warm end of the chips.
We ate them on the harbour wall with our feet dangling over the weed, watching the last light go pink across the bay. When we got home she tore a corner off the timetable I'd been squinting at, turned it over and wrote in pencil, in her careful looping hand: be happy for this moment, this moment is your life. Then she drew a small heart beside it, a bit wonky, and tucked it into my coat pocket. I still have it. The ferry went the next morning, and I never once looked at the clock.
