He had drawn a stroke through the second word almost at once, a single ruled line like a spirit level on a shelf, and then, pleased with himself for having thought of it at all, a smiley face with a curl for a mouth. Get tattoo, it said, with tattoo struck clean through.

Marjorie found the pad in March, while hunting for the boiler number. She read the crossed-out line twice, then turned the page and found the next thing he had written, dated underneath in a different pen: Ask Marj again. Nothing else. He had never asked again, and she had never mentioned it, because she had known the answer was no and liked him better for hoping.

She carried the pad into the kitchen, found a biro in the drawer with the rubber bands, and wrote beneath him: Yes, but not a swallow. Then she tore the sheet along the perforations, folded it in four, and slid it into the pocket of his good coat, where he would find it on Sunday when he reached for his gloves.
