Dear Ruthie, the lambing is finished and the ewes have gone out on the top field, so I finally have an hour to write properly. You will not believe what Dad found under the hay cart on Tuesday. It was grey, the size of a bread loaf, and its whole face was split open in a grin, as if it had just heard the best joke in Shropshire.

I didn't believe him either, so I went down with the torch and a bucket of turnips. It did not come out for the turnips. It sat very still in the straw, two round eyes blinking at me, three long whiskers on each side of a nose that was only a dot. I said good morning, which felt silly, and it grinned wider, which I took as a yes.

Since then the gate by the bottom barn has stopped sticking. Mum found a heap of conkers arranged neatly on the step, and the hens have started laying in the one nest box that always stayed empty. Nobody has seen it properly except me, and I think it mostly wants company on the cold nights.
