The dog came through the gap in the privet at first light, which was the part that stayed with you. The gap had been the width of a fist on Friday. Now it was the width of a rolled newspaper, and he fed himself through it one inch at a time, ears folded flat, the way thread goes through a needle when nobody is watching the eye.

You had seen him before without knowing he belonged to anyone. He wore a collar with a small pink tag shaped like a heart, the paint worn to bare metal along one edge, and when you crouched to read it he sat down among your bean rows and waited with the patience of something that has been sent on an errand. The tag said PIP and a phone number with the first digits rubbed away.

You rang the number from the kitchen. You fetched a garden cane from the shed and laid it beside him. It came up short by an inch. He opened one eye, as if to say the rest of him was still on its way.
