Handwritten quote in cursive script

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows four lines of handwritten cursive text in black ink on a white background, reading no weapons, no hope, no friends, take that all away and what is left? me. The strokes are smooth, even and solid black with no shading or grey tones, and the lines are centred and evenly spaced. It appears to be a lettering design or stencil rather than a photograph of skin.

She found the tin behind the bags of loam, the one with the rusted hinge that her husband Ted had used for bent nails. Inside, folded small, was a seed packet from 1979 with his looping hand across the back. Sweet peas, Ted had written, and under it, in the careful slant he kept for things he meant to keep: no weapons, no hope, no friends. He had been a sergeant once, and he never talked about it. She had never asked which war the lines came from, only whether he would come in for tea.

She sat on the upturned crate and read it twice. The rest of the card was a list of ordinary chores, the bins and the boiler man and the gutter, but the words at the bottom had been pressed hard enough to dent the paper. Take that all away and what is left? Me.

She laughed, a short rough sound that startled a robin off the fence. Then she stood, tipped the last packet of seed into her palm, and walked out into the cold to find the patch by the south wall where the soil stayed warm. Sweet peas wanted something to climb, and she had a bamboo cane and a bad knee and the whole of the morning.
