Owen, you'll have the car keys in your hand before you've properly sat down, so listen. The examiner in Doncaster in 1979 was a man called Mr Pargeter, who smelled of Polo mints and held his clipboard like a hymn book. I was so tight in the chest I could barely say my own postcode. My instructor, a gruff chap named Len who chewed the end of a biro, leaned across at the lights and said, breathe in, love, and then breathe out the rubbish.

I failed the first time. I'd like to say it was the three-point turn, but it was the moment I stopped breathing at the roundabout on Carcroft Lane and sat there frozen while a milk float trundled past. The second time I did it on purpose. I counted to four going in, held it, and let it out slowly, the way you'd blow on hot soup.
