She shook the bag at her hip, felt the weight of the apples drag the strap tight, and tried not to think about the estate agent's letter folded in her back pocket. Her father had kept the orchard for forty-one years. Now there was a figure written on the bottom of it, and a date.

The packing crate at the foot of the ladder was where he always scrawled things for the pickers. Last September he had written the day's instructions in pencil, sharp and slanting: keep the ladder on the grass, not the mud. Beneath that, smaller, in a hand that wobbled as if he had been laughing or coughing, he had added the line she could read now without climbing down: inhale confidence, exhale doubt. She had taken it for one of his jokes, the kind he made when the cider barrels were being tested.

She came down slowly, rung by rung, and read it again in the dim shade. The words had not faded. Someone had gone over them twice so the lines would hold through the rain.

Ruth set the bag on the grass, breathed in until her ribs ached, and let the air out over the crate. Then she took the letter from her pocket and, before she could change her mind, wrote beneath his line in her own unsteady pencil: stay.
